The Australian Institute of Architects have announced the winners of its particularly prestigious Victorian Architecture Awards for 2018, with many congratulations and achievements to be noted for the award victors amongst Umow Lai’s valued project team members and collaborators.

The Australian Institute of Architects Awards program is an opportunity to highlight and acknowledge the exceptional work of architecture and design across Victoria.

The team at Kerstin Thompson Architects were presented with the Architecture Award for the Victorian College of the Arts former Mounted Police Stables project, under the categories for Heritage Architecture and Educational Architecture. The award-winning architectural team also received a Commendation in the Interior Architecture sector, for the newly transformed heritage listed building.

Umow Lai worked closely with Kerstin Thompson Architects to provide various services to the Victorian College of the Arts former Mounted Police Stables project including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, fire protection, audio visual, vertical transportation and fire safety.

The reconstructed studio, installation and performance space is now open to the public and will be identified as the VCA painting school’s new home.

The team at Umow Lai are pleased to have offered services to the completed conservation, showcasing a light-filled, design dynamic creative studio for art students in Melbourne.

The $18 million refurbishment is now a new entry point for VCA staff and students co-located with their colleagues and peers at the Southbank university campus, right in the heart of Melbourne’s Arts Precinct.

Umow Lai would also like to extend their felicitations to Bates Smart on their Architecture Award for 35 Spring Street – a premium residential project. Although no stranger to awards, this is a highly distinguished achievement for the team at Bates Smart, receiving the prize under the Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing category.

We look forward to the Victorian Architecture Awards in 2019, with interesting projects on the horizon for Umow Lai and our partners.
