The outback town of Winton is home to Queensland’s Iconic Waltzing Matilda Centre, honouring the great Australian poet, Banjo Paterson’s Australian anthem, “Waltzing Matilda”.

Umow Lai was fortunate to be selected as the consulting engineers on this multi-award winning project, bringing home a commendation of our own for the specialist lighting design in the foyer and reading room. The replication of night sky with a sporadic installation of downlights in varying sizes also integrated two constellations, Aquarius (Banjo’s star sign) in the foyer and the well-known and beloved Southern Cross in the reading room. The constellations are highlighted through the use of red downlights, drawing the eyes attention in the simulated night sky. Umow Lai also contributed to lighting the original Banjo Paterson statue, salvaged from the fire which destroyed the original museum, at the entrance of the building with subtle uplights which let the Iconic Australian shine in his own light.

The Mechanical Engineering for the site had to meet strict museum and art gallery standards due to the rare artefacts from both the centre’s collections, travelling exhibits and items on loan from other museums, art galleries and private homes around the world.

Umow Lai’s contribution also included a new supply authority connection, main switchboard, power distribution, general lighting and exit and emergency lighting along with ICT communications and security design, fire protection services and hydraulic systems for water, drainage and filtration.

The new centre is an exciting step forward for tourism in the area, capturing the local history and merging it with iconic Australian memories in a building which celebrates Australia’s history.

Umow Lai is excited and honoured to partake in the redevelopment and opening of such an iconic and robust Australian facility. We worked closely with Winton Shire Council to ensure that the Centre captured our distinctive Australian landscape, through experiential design” Umow Lai Project Leader and Senior Electrical Engineer, John Zunker.

The Waltzing Matilda Centre project received an Award for Commendation at the 2018 ies Lighting Society Lighting Design QLD Awards, Winner of the 2019 Australian Interior Design Award – Public Design Category, Winner of the 2019 DNA Paris Design Awards – Installation Category and  Honourable Mention at the 2019 IDA Design Awards – Installation Category.
