Umow Lai was engaged by Victoria Police to turn a commercial/retail space on Bourke St into modern office accommodations and a 24-hour Police Station for Victoria Police at the top end of town.

The two-level space caters to a variety of Victoria Police groups. The upper level offers office space and staff amenity for regular users and large groups converging on the city to manage public events and training.

It was essential that the space provided a strong Police presence in the CBD but was welcoming and not threatening. Umow Lai collaborated with Project Managers APP, Bramford Architects, Arete and City of Melbourne on elements of lighting, audio visual and security systems which complemented the interior design and provided a sense of safety for the building users, public and members.

The security element of the building was challenging because of the lack of existing infrastructure and the nature of the buildings original purpose, but the naked state of the base building allowed for innovative design.

Importance was placed on establishing the capacity and adequacy of the base building in the early stages of the project to identify any shortfalls early and prevent them from causing delays to the tight timelines and impacting on the budget.
