Located in the inner-city Brisbane suburb of Indoorpilly, Brigidine College follows the example of St Brigid – ‘a women of vision and courage, who actively challenged the social, political and cultural structures of her time.’
With the campus located on a steep hill, the design of two new buildings for Brigidine College was an intricate task, resulting in a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) building and an Administrative Building which is to become the new face of the college.
The new STEM centre includes flexible teaching spaces and laboratories which inspire knowledge and encourage collaborative teaching styles. The STEM building is linked back to the upper campus by a bridge from the garden terrace which acts as a pedestrian spine.
The building will include a range of systems to support future integrated learning opportunities 30kW rooftop photovoltaic array, energy management and mixed mode HVAC systems to the classroom and lab spaces. Within the new teaching spaces the ICT and audio-visual systems will support flexible and collaborative teaching styles with local wireless presentation systems and intuitive control systems for both the staff and students.
Umow Lai’s involvement in the project extended to Mechanical, Electrical, ICT, Fire Protection, Vertical Transport and Hydraulic services as well as showcasing their knowledge in Specialist Lighting, Audio Visual and ESD services.
