Umow Lai provided building services engineering consultancy for the Bio21 Institute, a 22,000 sqm, state-of-the-art research facility located on The University of Melbourne’s Western Precinct.

Complemented by a seven-story atrium, the Institute comprises the new building, plus physical links to the Veterinary Science School, and two refurbished annex buildings.

The centre has been designed to attract outstanding scientists and technicians from all over the world and is one of the largest biotechnology research centres in Australia.

Since its opening in June 2005 the Institute has been awarded the “Laboratory of the Year 2005” by Science Industry Australia and the Property Council of Australia’s Rider Hunt Award for the “Best Public Building 2006”.
