Dr. Weng Poh, Victoria
National Technical Director
As a highly regarded Fire Engineer, Dr Weng Poh begins his new role as National Technical Director of Fire Engineering at Umow Lai as a proven contributor to building fire safety development, design and management.
Weng is widely experienced with over 25 years of working in Fire Engineering, and has been with Umow Lai since 2002, contributing to a range of projects across the education, health, retail, civil and government sectors. His recent project experience includes the Royal Victorian Ear and Eye Hospital, Geelong Library Heritage Centre and 35 Spring Street Apartments.
Widely accomplished, Weng has been awarded the Institution of Engineers Australia’s R W Chapman Medal in 2002, the AIRAH WR Ahern Award in 2012 and was elected as National President of the Society of Fire Safety, Engineers Australia in 2014.
Weng enjoys conveying complex engineering principles using various communication tools, including writing, graphics, and verbal presentations and he is a strong leader with a commitment to building and developing his team.
Matthew Douglas, Queensland
Matthew is a highly experienced Electrical / ICT Engineer with over 13 years’ experience in Building Services Engineering, bringing a diverse range of project experience including health, aviation and education to Umow Lai when he started in 2012.
As a multi-disciplinary Project Leader, he has been involved in the successful delivery of the recently completed GE Headquarters, University of Southern Queensland Education Gateway Building along with ongoing Technical Review roles on the Sunshine Coast University Public Hospital and the Gold Coast Private Hospital.
As part of the Brisbane leadership team Matthew has significantly contributed to the growth of the Brisbane office, which has now grown to over 25 staff, since its opening in 2010.
Praveen Seethapathi, Victoria
An important member of the Melbourne office, Praveen has been employed as a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Umow Lai since 2010.
With engineering consulting experience in Australia as well as India, he has worked across a wide range of projects, including the 15-story 150 Collins Street building in Melbourne, the 6 Green Star Rated Victoria University – Training and Trades Facility, as well as other educational, commercial & retail projects that he has seen through from conceptual design to construction phase.
Praveen’s promotion to Associate is a result of his technical expertise, dedication and commitment to clients.
Andy Fung, Victoria
Andy has nine years of experience in the engineering industry, encompassing specialty skills in fire and egress modelling, detection and suppression systems, laboratory hazardous area assessments and audits and inspections.
In the seven years he has been at Umow Lai, Andy has gained experience across a wide range of sectors and participated in major projects including the Fire Safety Engineering design of Sydney Airport Terminal 1 and Knox Shopping centre. He has also been involved in numerous fire safety audits and the Fire Protection Services Design for a number of projects including the Knox Private Hospital Expansion and Dandenong Site C2.
Andy is a valued member of the Fire Engineering team and plans to continue to work closely with clients to ensure the best outcome for each project.
Afroz Awan, New South Wales
Senior Mechanical Engineer
Afroz joined the Umow Lai Sydney Office in October 2014 as a Specialist Engineer focussing on Ecological Sustainable Development and Mechanical Services. She then transitioned into the role of a Mechanical Engineer soon after and has six years experience in this role.
She is experienced in a wide range of sectors including commercial, retail, transport and education, with major projects including the Macquarie University Energy Audits, the Town Hall House tri-generation upgrade and the Garden Buffet fitout at the Star.
Aside from her various skills in engineering, Afroz is a strong communicator and is committed to working with those around her to find solutions to operational and incumbent design issues she has detected.
Maciej Wodecki, New South Wales
Senior Mechanical Engineer
An experienced Mechanical Engineer, Maciej has become an important team member for the Sydney office since relocating from the Melbourne office in 2013.
He has garnered successful results during his three years with Umow Lai in major projects across a variety of sectors including education, transport, data and retail, specialising in various energy efficient applications such as Underfloor Air Distribution and various energy modelling software packages, which he has utilised for the purpose of supporting the Green Star Certification team.
Major projects for Maciej include Energy Simulations at the UWS Science Building, the upgrade of the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay and the Retail Ready Meats food processing facility.
