Australia was one the first countries in the world to adopt the performance-based fire engineering approach to building fire safety.

And now, 25 years later, this fire engineering discipline has reached maturity and Australia remains as the top nation in the world in the application of fire safety engineering technology. These capabilities foster ongoing research and development that includes the application of the latest fire and smoke spread computer simulation methods.

Fast forward to 2016. The Conference of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) is being held in Warsaw, Poland from 23-25 May, and Dr Weng Poh and Andy Fung, two leading practitioners from the Umow Lai engineering consultancy, have been invited to represent their country and deliver a paper that focuses on the approach taken in the design of shopping centres in Australia.

In their Case Study, they will present an up-to-date synopsis outlining how fire safety initiatives can be integrated into the design of shopping center referencing the conference theme: Performance-Based Codes and Fire Safety Design Methods.

The SFPE conference is targeted to professionals involved in fire safety engineering, regulations development and enforcement, testing, standards of development and engineering design methods. Hundreds of delegates from around the world are expected to attend.

Dr Poh is the National President of the Society of Fire Safety Engineers of Australia and is listed in the internationally prestigious publication,  Marquis Who’s Who in the World, 2016, 33rd edition;  Andy Fung is an Accredited Fire Safety Engineer.
